Information
It is a historical site located in the town of Bacalar, in the south of the state of Quintana Roo. It is right in the centre of the city and in front of the Laguna de Bacalar (like a lake), so you can see many tourists around the place.
This fort was built by the Spaniards in the 18th century to protect themselves from the attacks of French and especially English pirates.
Today it is a tourist attraction that can be visited. When you walk around it you can see that it is made of stone. It is possible to access its upper part, since there are cannons at the top and there is an excellent panoramic view of the shoreline and the Laguna de Bacalar. It includes a museum with explanatory posters of the history of the place, plans, models and exhibitions of weapons, cannons and sculptures.
