It is a natural reserve of 73986 hectares, located in the north of Chile. It includes several sectors with different environments and altitudes, covering part of the Atacama Desert.
Within its boundaries are cultural and natural attractions such as archaeological sites, rock formations and salt flats.
To visit and get to know it well, several days are needed, as there is a lot to see. San Pedro de Atacama is undoubtedly the ideal place to stay, as it is close to many of its attractions and also has a large number of services for tourists. Toconao is much smaller but also has accommodation and grocery shops.
To mention some of the places to visit within this reserve:
- Tulor: archaeological site, an ancient Atacameño village.
- Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon): landscape with formations and colours in the rocks.
- Atacama Salt Flat and its bodies of water such as Chaxa.
- Tara Salt Flat and Monjes de Pacana: a salt flat at more than 4000 metres above sea level, and volcanic rocks or formations.
- Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques: high altitude bodies of water, over 4000 metres above sea level.
- Tambillo: a tamarugo forest.
