Information of Neuquén

An overview of what is there and what to do.

It is an Argentine province located in the Patagonian region.

Its relief shows its western part elevated by the presence of the Andes Mountains. As we move eastwards, the altitude decreases and it becomes plateaus. In the southwestern half of the Andean zone there is forest, while the rest of the province is dominated by steppe.

The most popular tourist destinations are Aluminé, Junín de los Andes, San Martín de los Andes, Villa La Angostura and Villa Pehuenia.

A highlight is the number and extent of its protected areas:
- The vast Nahuel Huapi (shared with Río Negro) and Lanín National Parks offer lakes, forests and mountains. Both have distinct sections, each with trekking and camping options.
- Los Arrayanes National Park, located on a peninsula, includes a arrayán or Chilean myrtle forest with very old specimens. It has trails, one of which runs the length of the park.
- In the steppe zone is the Laguna Blanca National Park, where in addition to the body of water that bears its name (Laguna Blanca) there are trails to walk along, and it is a good place for bird and reptile watching.
- There are also provincial natural areas to visit. The Domuyo Natural Protected Area has many attractions around the volcano that bears its name (Domuyo), which is also the highest peak in the province. The Epu Lauquen Natural Protected Area shows its lakes, camping sites and trails to a waterfall. And the Tromen Provincial Park is impressive for its volcano with a body of water at its foot.

Another tour is the Road of the Seven Lakes, which is a drive along National Route 40 where you can see and access different lakes. The natural hot springs of the volcanic areas of Caviahue-Copahue and Domuyo also stand out, which in both cases have infrastructure to enjoy a thermal bath. And for the snow season, there are skiing and snowboarding activities in the Cerro Chapelco (a mountain).
