Information
It is a city located on the coast of the Nuevo Gulf and is one of the most populated in the province. It has a tourist information office, shops, restaurants, hotels, petrol station and ATM. It is called the 'Capital del Buceo' (Capital of Diving), and has many agencies that offer excursions to do this activity in the waters of the gulf.
It is in a tourist area, and there are places to visit both in the city itself and in the surrounding area:
- It has a long beach which is very busy in summer, with a pier and a pedestrian path to walk along.
- In the middle of the city is the Museo del Hombre y el Mar (Museum of Man and the Sea), which has different rooms to show the nature of the sea and the historical relationship it has had with man.
- Taking the Almirante Brown Boulevard southwards for about 3 or 4 km, you will get to the area of Punta Cuevas. There is a historical park there, which tells the story of the arrival of the Welsh to this place through a circuit with walkways, a descent to the beaches to see some caves and the Museo del Desembarco (museum of the Disembarkation). A few metres along the boulevard you pass the monument to the Indio Tehuelche (Tehuelche Indian) in the middle of the road. Further on (already on Julio Verne Street) you arrive at the Ecocentro, where there are exhibitions and information about the marine ecosystem.
Among the attractions that can be visited outside the city we have:
- Punta Loma: a protected area with a colony of sea lions.
- Cerro Avanzado: beach area and a hill with unique characteristics.
- El Doradillo: natural beaches from where you can have a close look at the southern right whale.
- Península Valdés: an extensive protected area with wildlife and tourist sites to visit.
