Main attractions: a province to enjoy nature and its protected areas. Steppe and kilometers of coastline in the east, with beaches and penguin colonies. An Andean zone in the west with forests, lakes and an infinite number of paths to explore.
It is the third largest province in Argentina, located in Patagonia.
With respect to its relief, the west of the province is a high area due to the presence of the Andes Mountains. As we move eastwards, there are plateaus that go down in altitude until we finally reach the Atlantic coast.
Tourist destinations can be grouped into the following categories:
a) Andean Zone: it is characterised by its mountains, forests and lakes. The main tourist towns are Esquel, Lago Puelo and Trevelín. The national parks Lago Puelo and Los Alerces offer trails, camping sites and access to different forest attractions. There is also skiing.
b) Coast: beaches alternate with cliffs. The possibility of observing marine fauna is of great interest. Among the places to visit, the following stand out:
- Península Valdés: you can see both marine and terrestrial fauna. It has a penguin colony in a sector of the coast and from Puerto Pirámides there are boat excursions to see whales.
- Puerto Madryn: it has in its surroundings to go to El Doradillo, Punta Loma and Cerro Avanzado. It also offers diving.
- Penguin colonies of Punta Tombo and Cabo Dos Bahías.
On the other hand, in the valley of the Chubut River you can visit Trelew with its paleontological museum and the traditional Welsh village of Gaiman. And in the south of the province there is a petrified forest near the town of Sarmiento.
Something very important is to take into account the time of the year to go according to the activity you want to do. For hiking it is best to go in summer (December to March) while for skiing in winter (June to September). And to see wildlife, you should consider that many species are only around for a few months of the year, as is the case of whales (between June and October) or penguins (October to March).
