Sierra de los Padres

Information

It is a locality in the province of Buenos Aires, situated at about 19 km from the city of Mar del Plata. Its particularity is that it is placed in a low mountainous terrain that belongs to the Tandilia system, which are the oldest mountains in Argentina. You can see undulations with big rocks and hills all around.

It is a good option for those who live or spend the summer in Mar del Plata or other centers of the Atlantic coast, since this town is nearby, and here you can see attractions and landscapes quite different from those seen in the beach area.

It has services for visitors such as grocery shops, restaurants, accommodation and an ATM. On the outskirts there are also camping options.

Inside the village an attraction is the Gruta de los Pañuelos (Cave of the Handkerchiefs). It has a car park and a handicraft fair by the entrance, from where a short and easy path leads to a grotto with a virgin surrounded by hundreds or thousands of handkerchiefs that were left tied by visitors over the years.

About 3-4 km away is the Laguna de los Padres (like a lake), which is surrounded by green spaces with trees, perfect for an afternoon picnic. There is also a museum and a reconstruction of a Jesuit mission.

To get there from Mar del Plata:
- By car: take Pedro Luro Avenue in a north-westerly direction, which becomes National Road 226. From this road, the access to Sierra de los Padres is the Padre Luis Varetto Avenue, which is 4 kilometres to the entrance arch.
- By bus: the bus line 717 goes from the centre of Mar del Plata, passes by Colón Square, San Martín Square, takes Pedro Luro Avenue, goes along Route 226 and leaves at the entrance arch of Sierra de los Padres.
