It is a protected natural area in Mendoza, where Cerro Aconcagua is located. With 6962 metres above sea level, it is the highest peak in America and in the entire southern hemisphere. The park covers 65720 hectares and ranges in altitude from 2500 metres to 6962 metres.
The site receives visitors who come to see the place, to do trekking activities, or to make the famous ascent to the summit.
An important fact is that, besides the ascent to the summit of Aconcagua, there are also other trekking options of varying difficulty. There are short treks of 200 metres, and others that last 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days and 7 days. Depending on the trek, there are cases where the permit and payment of the entrance ticket can be obtained on the spot, or on the contrary it must be processed in the office located in the city of Mendoza (capital of the province). Also, depending on each case, the regulatory equipment to be carried varies.
It should be taken into account that most of the activities must be done between November and March or April. The rest of the year you can only do the interpretative trail Laguna de los Horcones.
Please note that for minors, there may be restrictions or requirements (e.g. signed parental authorisations) depending on the activity you want to do or the age range.
The place has park rangers, who give instructions and control the activities in the park. Due to the large number of visitors, a lot of attention is dedicated to the cleanliness of the place. For example, people doing the ascent or certain trekking options are given bags to deposit and bring back all their waste.
There are 2 entrances to the park, both with parking spaces:
a) Horcones: this is where most visitors enter the park. The Laguna de los Horcones interpretative trail (of low difficulty) starts from here, and there are other trekking options of different duration and difficulty. It is also the usual starting point for the ascent to the summit.
b) Punta de Vacas: it is less visited. There are also several trekking options of different duration and difficulty. From here there is a second (less used) starting point for the ascent to the summit.
