It is a city in the Argentinean province of Buenos Aires, located on the Argentine Sea coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, as it is a typical holiday destination for the inhabitants of Greater Buenos Aires. During the warm summer months (especially in January and February) it receives crowds that come to take advantage of its beaches and the sea. There is also an important amount of visitors during Holy Week and long weekends.

It is a large city with a wide gastronomic and lodging offer, and it has all kinds of services available, such as tourist information offices, petrol stations, automatic cash dispensers, supermarkets, etc. It also stands out for its offer of bars and shows such as theatre plays. Its downtown area extends from the casino and includes the pedestrian street and San Martín Square. By the port there is an area of restaurants that specialise in different types of fish dishes. To move around the neighbourhoods and to get to the different attractions there are several bus lines.

It has numerous seaside spots distributed along its long coastline of almost 25 km, with accesses from its avenues that run parallel to it (which would be the continuity of Provincial Route 11). All of them fill up with visitors during the hot months. If you want a solitary beach, there is no alternative but to look for it outside the city or to go there during the low season.

Another tour that can be done is a walk through the Puerto de Mar del Plata Nature Reserve, which has a circuit of footbridges along the coast and lagoons where you can observe aquatic birds of the region.

In a sector of the port there is a sea lion colony, which can be reached by an asphalted road. They can be seen from the pavement, where there are signs and a protective fence that separates the place where the animals are. The particularity is that these sea lions are all males, and something that can be observed is that there are fewer of them during the breeding season (between December and February), as many of them move to other places where there are females of this species.

This publication talks about how to get there/transport.
