Information of Corrientes
An overview of what is there and what to do.
It is a province in the northeast of Argentina. It is part of the so-called Mesopotamia region together with Entre Ríos and Misiones. Its capital has the same name (Corrientes) and its official languages are Spanish and Guaraní as an alternative.
Its territory is flat, with few hills or elevations, where the highest point of the province is the Cerro Nazareno (a hill) with only 179 metres above sea level.
It is surrounded by the Paraná River in the north and west, and by the Uruguay River in the east. On both watercourses there are beaches and offers for boat trips. In the towns on or near both rivers there are many tourist attractions:
a) By the Paraná River:
- There are beaches in the northern localities of the province in Itá Ibaté, Itatí, Ituzaingó and Paso de la Patria. In Ituzaingó, the natural areas of Rincón de Santa María and the Cambyretá Portal to the Iberá Wetlands are also outstanding. In Itatí, its basilica is very popular on Sundays and especially when there are pilgrimages.
- In the west of the province there are beaches in Bella Vista, Empedrado and Goya. There are also recreational areas with bathing sites on other rivers that are tributaries of the Paraná, for example on the Corriente River in Esquina and on the Santa Lucía River where there is a white sandy beach in the town that bears its name (Santa Lucía). Other attractions of these localities are the great gullies of Empedrado, the Las Damas Island in Goya and the Toropí Paleontological Reserve near Bella Vista.
b) By the Uruguay River: there is a beach in Monte Caseros. In Yapeyú you can visit museums and appreciate the remains of the house where José de San Martín was born and also of the great Jesuit reduction that existed in the 17th century.
The natural attraction of this province is the Iberá Wetlands, which is an enormous extension with marshes and bodies of water covering approximately 13000 km². It has different entrance gates or portals, the most common being the one called Carambola (near the town of Concepción del Yaguareté Corá), Cambyretá (near Ituzaingó), Laguna Iberá (in Carlos Pellegrini) and San Antonio (near Loreto). Activities such as hiking, guided boat trips and wildlife watching are available. It is an area of great biodiversity, where you can easily spot species such as the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus), yacaré (Caiman yacare) and a great number of birds.
